Hard-headed And Lovely

for hours i sat around with you
and we talked about an animal we knew
it looked like a starfish, or an anemone
we couldn't put a name on it
we were silly from the vino and the doobie
so we went to see a european movie
it was slow and lame, but not sad
cause when i'm with you nothing is sad

i want no sun when i'm lonely
i want the rain to keep me company
whisper into my ears
and drown my tears
tapping on the roof like a gallop of horses
soothing like a million voices
once it starts, there's nothing you can do
it's hard-headed and lovely, like you

and all the time that you're awake
my mental health is at stake
you go blah blah gap gap yap yap yak
and i can never get my thoughts back

nity-nite, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite
i'll just read a little, then i'll switch off the light
and the sun will shine
on your body and mine

This Will Be All

i caught you in a moment of weakness
you'd been crying and you needed a light
the nearness left me speechless
but the timing was just right
well, i didn't take a chance
some trifle drove me away
but your swift sideway glance
was hotter than the middle of the day

and it's hard to believe there ever was a winter
in the blur of the heat and the dazzling glitter
and it's hard to believe that this will be all
and there is never gonna be another call

i cracked one more match on the platform
expecting oversight from the authority
i thought of disobedience as an art form
and of the use of violence metaphorically
how i never got too far with my pride
and contempt for computers and phones
how principles are always put aside
with the odds of winning on your own

stirring a tasteless hot drink
with two fingers of my cigarette hand
i faked interest in the blinking
pink sign of a cotton candy stand
we got on the train at the same time
using different doors
met halfway, and smiled
because we'd sortof met before

Do It While You Can

you gotta do it while you can
you gotta do it while you can
you gotta take whatever you can
you gotta give, you gotta take, you gotta give
you gotta do it while you can

that party's gonna be a blast
we're gonna get there first, we're gonna leave fast
you've got to have the brass to ask
you've got to wear the brass mask

every temptation is satan
and every invitation is an ultimatum
eat it hot when it's brought to you
is all you have to do

you can't recapture a moment
it's gone, flushed down the toilet
it's a pointless endeavor
the most pathetic predicament ever

i am now five hundred moons old
and only as wise as i am bold
but my story never repeats itself
and the ending is something else

I Don't Have Anything To Do

i don't have anything to do
but it's all right cause i have you

i don't have anything to wear
but it's all right cause i have you, so i don't care

i don't have a penny to my name
but it's all right cause i have you so i don't care: it's all the same

and i have no beliefs of any kind
but it's all right cause i have you so i don't care, it's all the same
i don't mind

i'm not coming up with a plan for the years to come
but it's all right cause i have you so i don't care, it's all the same
i don't mind: i'm gonna get me some

and in my mouth, there isn't one good tooth
but it's all right cause i have you so i don't care, it's all the same
i don't mind, i'm gonna get me some, i don't give a hoot

i don't have much hair beneath my hat
but it's all right cause i have you so i don't care, it's all the same
i don't mind, i'm gonna get me some, i don't give a hoot, and i like it like that

Yellow And Blue

i turned the tv on to cover the rumble of the ocean
i watched a girl in red leap at the pope in slow motion
it somehow made me think of judas exploding
and his guts in a river of blood, floating
who is gonna get to mister bigshot, if not
the lunatic shepherd with the slingshot
and who is gonna make whoopee
if not eleonore, and you and me

the gesture is greater than the deed
the craving greater than the need
lighting impossible fires
through the ebb and flow of empires
you'd blown the daylight out of me
and put dreams where my thoughts should be
i showed my true colors to you
as expected, yellow and blue

in the chattering of the crowd
i heard myself think out loud
making up rules for games
involving both of your names
the sun would rise and set with the three of us
we'd be like the forefathers, the kings, and jesus
the good, the bad, and the superhero
plus, minus, and zero

You Bomb

my god, it's windy and cold again
it looks like heavy rain
fiddling around, i lost my gift
found love, and got spiffed

there's always some light on
and the magic wanders, terrified
all the darkness is gone
there is no-where left to hide

you bomb, you've blown a world away
in a minute of an hour of your day
leaving castles in the sky
and sparkles in the wake of your smile

and when the earth sinks into the sea
it'll be all right, if you ask me
we've all snitched a few moments in the sun
and tinkered with love and fun

thirty thousand years ago
i dreamed of you
now half a world's aglow
and you've come true

you bomb, you cyclone, you storm
you went away the way you'd come
leaving castles in the sky
and sparkles in the wake of your smile

I Wanna Be With You

if the night gets cold, we can get closer
for lack of a saucer we will use a coaster
and when the peas are gone we will drink the brine
and turn the brandy into wine

i snagged my shirt on a white picket
and the ground was firm where i hit it
now my ass is as hard as your head,
life, and yesterday's bread

at the stroke of twelve, when the bell tolls
when the lightning flashes, and the thunder rolls,
and history starts anew
i wanna be with you

a sullen man with sodden eyes
all of a sudden looks up and smiles
like the groom at his bride
and i wanna hear the flip side

we are lost and confused and alive
read all about it on page five
there is no train, there is no bus
just the world, and the two of us

I'm Riding Muni

outside is gray, outside is gloomy
but the driver smiled as if he knew me
and a little bit of rain is nothing to me
i'm riding muni

you've got a motorcar, and you can't park it
me, i'm getting off right here, on market
i've got so much hanging around to do
i'll leave the worries and work to you

the cable car is a little bit pricey,
but not for me: i have a monthly pass, see
it pulls me up, it slides me down,
and leaves me in the heart of chinatown

you wouldn't wanna be puking on the twenty-two
i've been there myself, i'm just warning you
but still it's nice, some nights
to have a drink here and there, and get home alright

Love Me The Way I Am

love me, love me, love me the way i am
love me, love me, or find yourself another man

behind these heavy-lidded eyes
sits a little boy who sulks and cries
and in the dank cellar of my soul
sleeps a wine that's best served cold

i'm a bit of a reptile, i need heat
i always have sneakers on my feet
also because you never know
i might get into trouble, and have to be on the go

you think you know me, but that's not true
there's one thing i love more than i love you
i can't help it, it's a sickness, an addiction
i get my kicks from self-contradiction

no need to snivel, have a gin and soda
you're not gonna change me, not one iota
i need to bask, cause i've got cold blood
and i'm keeping myself well-shod

I Think I'll Come It Home

i like it here
i like the atmosphere
i like the buses, and the trams, and the ocean wind,
and the two-story houses on the close-shaven hills
i think i'll call it home

i like it here
i'll give it one more year
i like the cracks in the tarmac and the nakedness
and how the dress code is simple: a smile on your face
i think i'll call it home

i like it here
i'm having one more beer
for the sake of hanging, and the lingering along
of the twentieth century, its movies and its songs
i think i'll call it home
