Where Do We Go From Here

i put my love away
from the sun and the rain
until the day
i'd deem safe again

in some squalid cavern, it waits for the coming of the lord
it waits, all useless and bored
and i can face the dawn without a shred of fear
oh, where do we go from here

i'm sorry to tell you, my friend
but life started in the briny
and that's how it's gonna end:
soft, indifferent, and slimy
i pin my hopes on screenplays and dreams
like the romans pinned their rebels on beams
and i can face the dawn without a shred of fear
oh, where do we go from here

every little love bird
is a tumor in the bark
and every step forward
is a leap into the dark
but i'm bearing glad tidings,
casting out demons
i'm a bearer of glad tidings,
busting machine guns
and i can face the dawn without a shred of fear
oh, where do we go from here

i put my love away
from the sun and the rain
until the day
i'd deem safe again
in some squalid cavern, for a decade or two
it's been waiting for you

When You Love

right into the bull's eye
quick as a mouse, silent as a sigh
like an unidentified flying object
like a giant, like a prophet,
you showed up, and the world backed down
it felt so good to have you around
open your eyes, and rejoice
when you love, you don't have a choice

on the veranda, you poured tea
for my friends and for me
up with the corners of their lips, they could tell
i had fallen underneath some spell
i couldn't hear a word they said,
with you all over my head
it's funny how one truth wins over so many lies
when you love, there's no compromise

the very second i caught a glimpse of you
i knew i was gonna love you
there was no thinking, no fear
my mind had never been so clear
it was smooth, and yet sublime
like a power outage in the daytime
i was ready to lose all that i thought of as mine
when you love, everything is fine

Brinkstown

come again, i was somewhere else
i thought you were talking to yourself
but you know what: you were right there with me
in my number one city

where the sun goes down every day at five
a thousand bars come alive
the beer flows, smoke rises
and nobody knows where daddy-blue-eyes is

brinkstown, where d'you wanna go
brinkstown, well i thought so
brinkstown, where d'you wanna be
brinkstown, just follow me

when it comes to hygiene and sanitation
we don't meet the standards of the european union
we don't wear gloves or trim our trees
and you can smoke and drink wherever you please

our birth control is the most efficient
but we can count on a steady flow of immigrants
it's seventy degrees (twenty celsius) all year
and the nights are warm, but not the beer

there has to be a piano and an upright bass
in every public house and meeting place
so if you want some peace and quiet
not here, my friend, you're not gonna find it

This World Is Too Small

this world is too small for me
this world is too small for you
this world is too small, too small
this world is too small, too small
this world is too small for me and you

we're not out of the wood yet
we haven't quite understood yet
light amplification by means of stimulated
emission of radiation is overrated
and the scale is too big, your best friend's a clone
you're always connected, never alone
who's gonna snip the wire, who's gonna snip the wire
who's gonna be a shouter and a crier

they go out late, all decked out
just to get wasted and checked out
some are fakers, the best are copycats
one thing they all resemble is sick spoiled brats
the stage is packed to the rafters
there's a shortage of puppet masters
who's gonna pull the strings, who's gonna pull the strings
who's gonna get the door when it rings

now everything you say will be taken down
and the law-abiding citizens will frown
it's harder to beat around the boulder
when you have someone else's head on your shoulder
and you can't break through an open door
even the yeti can't hide anymore
who's gonna get the hammer, who's gonna get the hammer
who's gonna be a smasher and a slammer

All In Fun

all in fun, all in fun
was it really all in fun

i could see you when i wore my glasses
off season i had time to kill
you were french-kissing and cutting classes
with Paul Gallea in Paceville

i was curious of you
i was curious of you

you must be keeping pickled hearts in jars
and count them everyday
there are twenty-five hundred stars
and we're stuck in the Milky Way

all in fun, all in fun
was it really all in fun

when i thought that you'd really come around
when i thought that you'd changed your tune
my feet just lifted off the ground
and i hovered over like the moon

now i'm furious with you
i am furious with you

you must be keeping pickled hearts in jars
and count them everyday
there are twenty-five hundred stars
and we're stuck in the Milky Way

all in fun, all in fun
was it really all in fun

i wish that the moon could have seen us
chuckling through the drinking bout
there once was life on Venus
but the heat just dried it all out

N'Guyen Nu

she goes by the name of Nu, it means “naked” in french
in her bed-sitting room there's a stove, a bench,
an ashtray, and some kind of desk between that and the bed,
and a shelf for liquor and books: watch your head

and words can't describe her beauty at all
she's not like Harlow, and she's not like Bacall
but she's an angel, a princess under cover
to know her is to love her

Nu, Nu, Nu, N'Guyen Nu
i've always been in love with you

she cooked me a meal, and when i ate it
i liked it so much i went apeshit
i helped myself to wine, and i helped myself to gin
before the first of her guests had even come in

i was much less of a help than a hindrance
stoogin' about near the entrance
good and drunk, good and funny, good and gay
between the booze shelf and the ashtray

Nu, Nu, Nu, N'Guyen Nu
i've always been in love with you

i slid a bit closer, timidly
i remember that moment so vividly
with her braids falling neatly on her open shirt
she hit me with a scolding squint, and it hurt

she's got vigorous limbs, but a brittle heart
so she was careful of every move on my part
she skated briskly on the wet floor
and took a water gun out of her desk drawer

Hang On

i was patting the crocodiles with the tip of the paddle
zigzagging my way through the counter-stream
with my body so busy, my thoughts were idle
i dreamed a dream within the dream

i was a character actor, with a cane and galoshes
a suave smuggler of nutmeg and mud
i got marooned on Hollywood rushes
and fell overboard with a lonely thud

hang on, said i to me
hang on now, what do you see
hang on when there's no-one around
and the sun goes down

i threw a four, and a one, and six six six six
in my lucky tuxedo from the charity shop
we got out of the car on pogo sticks
half a mile further at every hop

hang on, said i to me
hang on now, what do you see
hang on when there's no-one around
and the sun goes down

we were standing and sneezing all around the casket
all straight faces, and low sodium tears
the body went nuts, the body blew a gasket
and laughed out loud at our alligator fears

Take Me

take me, take me, take me
take me to the twenty-second

make way
for the prince, the law, and the family
and on Mayday
wear a sprig of lilies-of-the-valley
in Babylon you were slaves
in Babylon you dug the graves
but with no idols to hold on to
your thoughts became bold and new

do you wanna walk through the vineyards with me
since the streets ain't what they used to be
if you wanna get off the floor
well that's what these hands are for
floorwalkers are watching you
all information is taboo
but as long as you and i are game
we can walk and talk just the same

no room for giants, trolls, and elves
in the way of life we've chosen for ourselves
science is greater than art
it tears the world apart
but, God forbid, don't do the math
just follow the beaten path
your home is where you're from
just let what's coming to you come

Welcome To The Doghouse

you're obviously funny and smart
and of course you have a good heart
please make yourself at home in my humble abode
or at least have one for the road

i know you're busy like a busy bee
but you can't be too busy for me
stop crouching around, let it all hang out
for cryin' out loud, we won't bite

my friend is dumb, but he's not stupid
he's always eavesdropping, always snooping
he loves a piece of chocolate, he loves a grain of rice
he is the sweetest of mice

please do not be afraid
to sit on a bed that hasn't been made
meet the mouse, meet the louse
welcome to the doghouse
